The day I caught my head in the parlor banister my father pushed cooking

oil through my hair I knew by the size of his hands I would not be there

long pulled me free the night the furnace backfired filled the

split-level with smoke so white I thought our house was Heaven crawled

outside to the huge star-dizzy sky slept at a neighbors where the moon

fell through Venetian blinds in slats laddered me in the brightest

darkness a clock ticked until dawn and ravens from black trees drank

cold rain from mirrors in our backyard
