B A N I S T E R
Lenny DellaRocca
The day I caught my head in the parlor banister my father pushed cooking
oil through my hair I knew by the size of his hands I would not be there
long pulled me free the night the furnace backfired filled the
split-level with smoke so white I thought our house was Heaven crawled
outside to the huge star-dizzy sky slept at a neighbors where the moon
fell through Venetian blinds in slats laddered me in the brightest
darkness a clock ticked until dawn and ravens from black trees drank
cold rain from mirrors in our backyard
